About watches

What does Chronograph mean?

Chronograph provides the user with the ability to measure time in intervals. In this way, a stop watch, for example, is a chronograph.

What is a movement?

The movement is what drives the watch, and thus is the watch’s heart. Most watches just have a timer in the watch, but sometimes you see watches that are run by two different movements.

What does it mean when a watch is automatic?

Automatic watches are a type which is run by the arm and body movements. You should preferably walk with your watch on daily. If you for example, do not have your watch on for 72 hours, the watch will often stop working and you will have to win the watch back up. We always recommend to read a little more carefully in the manual for this type of watch, as there are special requirements in connection with the date change, which preferably should not be changed manually when the watch is on its own path to change the date, which often happens between the hours of 20:00 and 4:00. Automatic watches are environmentally friendly as they never replace the battery.

What does a kinetic watch mean?

Kinetic watches which for example is a Seiko trademark are run by the arm and body movements. There is a rechargeable 'battery' in the watch which is charged via the arm and body movements. Unlike automatic watches, the reserve battery life in this type of watch typically is 6 months.

What is the crown?

The crown is the part you can pull out on most watches for setting the time. Usually sitting on the right side of the watches, but several of the new brands are now starting to design watches with the crown on the left side to give a different look. Note that with the crown sometimes you just have to pull it out to level 1, 2 or 3, while in other cases, you have to twist the crown down and after that pull it out. Therefore, read the manual to avoid damaging the watch, because you know too much violence could destroy the crown.

What are the different types of glass?

There are several kinds of glass, but the most used one is undoubtedly mineral glass. Mineral glass is a very strong form of glass that stands almost everything. In addition to mineral glass, there is also hardlex glass, which is Seiko's own version of mineral glass, and sapphire glass and acrylic glass. Sapphire glass is the most scratch-resistant of all and is often used on the more expensive models. It is also the type of glass found in the very exclusive watches. Acrylic glass on the other hand is the weakest form and here the glass can easily be worn if you’re not careful. This type is found in some of those cheap Casio watches and generally inexpensive models. The glass will be plastered and become fine again but it is not covered by warranty.

What does water resistance mean?

There are many who believe that when a watch is water resistant to 10 ATM (100 meters) that one will be able to wear the watch for diving, but the fact is that there are some important guidelines that you should keep uo with. 3 ATM (30 meters) - the watch can be used in rainy weather conditions. ATM (50 meters) - the watch can be used in rainy weather conditions and bathtubs. 10 ATM (100 meters) - the watch can be used in rainy weather conditions as well as bathing and showering and swimming. 20 ATM (200 meters) or more - the watch can be used for rainy weather conditions as well as bath and shower, swimming and diving. We always recommend that you avoid letting your watch come in contact with water, as there may be dirt, lime and other things in the water that could cause the watch some discoloration and thus some damage of the watch’s lustrous design.

What is a resin strap?

A resin strap is a rubber strap which is made a little tough. It is obviously comfortable on the arm, but it is not as soft as for example ordinary rubber straps or silicone straps.
